Starting Your Own Website

I want to start my own website - what is the best way to do it? Do you want to know how to create a really great website without having to pay a fortune? The answer is Joomla! This is a great piece of software, which you can download for free from its home, www.joomla.org. Joomla is an example of a content management system (CMS). There are many, many of these available, but I have to say that Joomla is probably the best for most types of websites. It is fairly straightforward for even a newcomer to set up - and if you have difficulties, there is a huge on-line community offering support. Moreover where Joomla really scores in in the huge range of extensions available for it, from image galleries, newsletters and on-line forums to e-commerce. Whatever you want to do with your site there is likely to be an extension somewhere for it. The requirements for running a Joomla site are fairly minimal. Your web hosting must include PHP, and you will also require a MySQL database for your site. There are also a huge number of template designs available for Joomla, and tutorials available on-line if you want to try creating your own. What are the alternatives? Another popular CMS is Drupal, available from its home at www.drupal.org. Like Joomla it can be downloaded free, and has many extensions available. My experience is that Drupal is harder for a beginner to use, however it has many powerful features built-in, including a forum and blogging system that make it well worth the effort. It is particularly well suited to community and social network type sites. If you want to create an e-commerce site another useful alternative is Zen Cart, available from www.zen-cart.com. This is a dedicated e-commerce system, so offers less of the flexibility that Joomla! or Drupal offer, but is an excellent choice if you want an on-line store. |
