Setting up your own website

By Fiona Coulter of Inspiration Web Design

Setting up your own website can be easier than you think, if you are willing to put in a little time.

As a starter, you will need to register a domain name and arrange for hosting for your site. Hosting involves providing the actual space on a computer connected to the World Wide Web, and services such as email for your domain. There are many companies offering these services – just try Googling one of these terms and you are sure to find hundreds.

I would advise that, when choosing a hosting provider you don't just select one on the basis of price. Generally, if you pay a bit more, you will get a better service. Take some time to research your hosting company. If the only thing that they can offer is that they are cheap – avoid them! One thing that some cheaper hosting companies often do to cut costs is host too many sites on one server, which leads to server overload. There is little point in setting up a website if no one can access it, because the server is constantly overloaded.

Having set up your domain name and hosting, you are ready to set up your site. There a many ways you can proceed from here. If all that you want is a few pages then you can set up a simple site using Microsoft Publisher. However the approach that I would recommend is to get a Joomla! Site. Many hosting companies will actually offer the installation of Joomla! As a service. If not, then you can download Joomla yourself for free from www.joomla.org.

Joomla is an example of a content management system. That means that it allows you to manage the content of your site online through an administration system. You can easily add, edit and delete pages, without needing to know any of the technicalities of website design. Also, because Joomla allows for multiple user accounts, you can involve your friends in creating content for your site. If your are creating a site for your business you can create separate accounts for your co-workers or employees, and control the editing permissions. For example you can allow some users to create articles, but not publish them until they have been reviewed.

There are also a huge number of extensions available for Joomla: everything from social networking to e-commerce. Even if you only want a fairly simple site to start of with, it is a great idea to plan for the future, and use a system that will allow your site to grow however you want, when you want.
